Major Occupation Brong Ahafo is a great agricultural region of Ghana, and is often recognised as the breadbasket as, apart from its extensive forests reserve and cocoa plantations, it has a large acreage of food crops. Agriculture and related work is the major occupation in all districts, accounting for 66.4 per cent of the region’s economically active population. Significant proportions of the economically active persons are engaged as Production, Transport operators and Labourers (11.3%), Sales workers (7.6%), and Professional and related workers (5.8%). Political administration There are at moment 22 administrative districts in the Brong Ahafo Region, the second largest after the Ashanti Region with 27 administrative districts. Hitherto, there were 19 administrative districts until 2007 when the President by an Executive Instrument (E.I) created 27 new Districts, 4 Municipalities, Upgraded 26 existing Districts and 2 existing Municipalities. The new districts, municipalities and metropolitans created in the 2007 including 3 in Brong Ahafo Region were all inaugurated at their various locations simultaneously on the 29th of February 2008.The region also has 24 constituencies and 582 electoral areas or electoral units. These electoral areas consist of 2,292 basic units called polling stations. A Member of Parliament represents each of the 24 constituencies at the nation’s 230- member legislature. The Regional Minister is the political Head of the region, and the Chairman of the Regional Co-ordinating Council. Other members of the Regional Co-ordinating Council include the Regional Co-ordinating Director (Secretary), all the 22 District Chief Executives and Presiding members, as well as two representatives from the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs. All Regional heads of department are ex-officio members of the Regional Co-ordinating Council. The District/Municipal Assemblies are headed by Municipal/District Chief Executives. The District and Municipal Chief Executives are nominated by the President of the Republic and approved by two-thirds majority of the respective Municipal/District Assemblies. The Chief Executives, like the Regional Minister, are assisted by District Co-ordinating Directors.
