Based on the serious challenges associated with the individual-level data procedure, the aggregate level data of the districts in this study became inevitable. Even though there is the possibility to commit ecological fallacies associated with aggregate-data, the findings and conclusions of this study would be considered as prelude to future further research study on District Assembly elections in 2010 where survey interviews could be conducted to authenticate the findings of this study. Fieldwork Challenges The two months fieldwork in Ghana to collect data for this study was fraught with certain challenges. These include procedural and access among other challenges. This section presents the challenges from the field: First and foremost, in spite of the fact that I presented introductory本站提供代写Essay,代写Assignment,请联系QQ:949925041 letter from my Department and also identified myself with my student identity card, I was given a request form to fill at the Electoral Commission Headquarters in Accra and I was told to come back in two weeks time. Because of that I could not proceed with the data collection process until the two weeks elapsed since turnout of the District Assembly elections was the basis for selecting the study site. Two weeks later when I went back, much to my chagrin I was told that the Commission does not have a database which contains the voter turnout of all the District Assemblies in Ghana. Only few District Assemblies’ turnout could be generated to me at a time. In order to get over this turnout problem, I decided to limit my study to all the nineteen districts that existed during the 2006 District Assembly elections in Brong Ahafo Region which happens to be my home region. At the regional level, I was able to obtain the voter turnout for all the districts in the region but not without setbacks. In the first place, I have to visit the offices of the Regional Electoral commission for several times before I could meet the Regional Director, the only person who could give me the green-light to seek for the information I was looking for. Even though information of the local level election was available, but because it was not stored in a computer the officer who assisted me to obtain the data had to go through a huge stack of old and dusty files before finally retrieving them. Because of this I had to grease her palm with some financial reward as a sign of appreciation. Similar problem confronted me at the Headquarters of Ghana Statistical Service in Accra. There too, I have to fill in a request form in order to obtain the needed data. The biggest challenge was that the census report was such a bulky document that it was impossible for me to get a copy of it. It was also difficult to go through the whole document to extract the relevant information since there was no space to accommodate me. In the case of Brong Ahafo Regional Statistical Service, because of the upcoming 2010 Population and Housing Census, all the officers including the Regional Statistician were always out in the field making the necessary preparations for the event next year, so it was difficult to get access to them. Based on several phone calls and other informal means I was able to hook up with the Regional Statistician who collected my email address and sent to me both the 2003 Core Welfare Indicators Questionnaire (CWIQ) Survey and 2000 Population and Housing Census on Brong Ahafo Region for onward download of the two documents. |
