The Study Area
This study was carried out in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. The choice of this location is considered appropriate and timely as it tends out to be the most reliable region where required data for the study were readily available and accessible. The intention of the study was to use aggregate-data of all the 138 districts/municipal/metropolitan assemblies that existed during the 2006 District Assembly elections. However, it was difficult for me to obtain the voter turnout of all the Assemblies at one source, the Electoral Commission of Ghana as it did not have such database. Also, because of time and financial constraints, I was impossible for me to travel to all the ten regional offices of the Electoral Commission since there was no guarantee that I could get all the information that I needed.
Secondly, because of the unique location and characteristics of the Region, it was seen as the most appropriate to cater for the North and South dichotomy of Ghana.  .  Unequal and uneven development inherited from British colonialism by present day Ghana continues to divide the North from the South. While the south is generally advanced in terms of infrastructure and poverty reduction, the north is relatively under-developed and poverty stricken.   Ecologically, the North lies in savannah zone and is a major grain- and tuber-producing area. The vegetation is characterised by the guinea savanna type with scattered drought resistant trees such as the Shea, the baobab, dawadawa and neem.
The climate of the North is relatively dry, with a single rainy season that begins in May and ends in October. The amount of rainfall recorded annually varies between 750 mm and 1050 mm. The dry season starts in November and ends in March/April with maximum temperatures occurring towards the end of the dry season (March-April) and minimum temperatures in December and January.
On the other hand, the South lies within the wet semi-equatorial zone which is characterized by double maximum rainfall in June and October. The first rainy season is from May to June, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in June while the second season is from September to October, with little variations among the regions. The rainfall pattern averaging 1,600 mm per annum. Temperatures in the South are relatively moderate and range between 22oC in August and 34oC in March. The South has about 75 per cent of its vegetation within the high forest zone of Ghana. The South is noted for its rain forest, interspersed with patches of mangrove forest along the coast and coastal wetlands, while a large expanse of high tropical forest and semi-deciduous forest is also found in the northern part of it.
Because Brong Ahafo is located at the central point within the middle belt of Ghana, it shares the major characteristics of both the Northern and Southern regions. For instance, it is the only region that shares boundaries with 5 of the 10 regions i.e.  the Northern Region to the north, the Ashanti and Western Regions to the south, the Volta Region to the east, the Eastern Region to the southeast and an international border with La Cote d’Ivoire to the west.
