Cultural and Social Characteristics
Nationality
Majority of the region’s population are Ghanaians by birth and parenthood 94.0 per cent. Naturalized Ghanaians constitute an additional 3.4 per cent, while other ECOWAS nationals make up 1.9 per cent with other Africans and non-Africans being 0.8 per cent. The percentage of Ghanaians by birth in the districts varies from 91 to 97 per cent, with Sunyani, the capital having the highest (96.7%).  A smaller proportion of (5.8%) of the population originate from outside Ghana, made up of (3.8%) mainly from the five Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and (1.5%) and (1.2%) from other African and non-African countries respectively.
Ethnicity
Akans are the predominant ethnic group in the region and almost all the districts, (62.7%).  The non-Akan population in the region comprises the Mole-Dagbon (15.4%), Grusi (4.2%), Gurma (4.3%), Guan (3.9%), Ewe (3.4%), the Grusi (2.4%), Ga- Dangme (1.9%) and Mande-Busanga (1.5%).  The other smaller ethnic groups form about 2.7 per cent of the population of the region.
Religious Affiliation
The dominant religion in the region is Christianity (71.0%) followed by Islam (16.1%) and Traditional religion (4.6%). All other religious groups constitute insignificant proportions of the population. The proportion with no religion is however relatively high (7.8%).
Literacy of population
It reveals that 48.5 per cent of the population, 15 years and older in the region are not literate. Far under half (37.3%) are literate in both English and a Ghanaian language. Only 11.7 per cent are literate in English only. There are differences between the sexes in terms of literacy. More than half (57.4%) of the males are literate in English and a Ghanaian language compared with two fifth (33.0%) of the females.
Demographic characteristics
PopulationAccording to the 2000-population census, the Brong Ahafo region has a population of about 1,824,827 accounting for 9.6 per cent of the country’s total population. From the 2000 Census, the region’s population density of 45.9 persons per square kilometre is lower than the national figure (79.3 persons/km²).
Age and sex structure
There are slightly more males than females in the region with a sex ratio of 100.8 males to 100 females in 2000. The region has a youthful population with about two-fifths (43.1%) below 15 years of age, with a small proportion (4.5%) older than 64 years.
Rural-urban population
The region, (37.4%) is the fourth most urbanized, coming after Greater Accra (87.7%), Ashanti (51%) and Central (37.5%), Regions in Ghana. Only four districts, Sunyani (73.8%), Techiman (55.7%), Berekum (54.7%) and Tano (43.2%), have levels of urbanization above the regional average, with Sunyani, Berekum and Techiman having much higher proportion of urban than rural population; Sene and Kintampo South have the highest proportion of rural population.
