Metaphor Exercise
The following is a metaphor describing someone working in a particular industry. The metaphor also reveals images we can all understand. Can you guess what industry this person works in?
Energy infuses everything here. Like the medieval substance “phlogiston,” it takes the form of speed or momentum, a kind of ether* through which every event occurs. It contains the pulse of the race, all the races that have ever been run, past and future. It is the substance of the pace itself, the collective pace of the way things get done, are done, always have been done. You can affect it, you can tap into it, surge and ride it at top speed for a time, but you cannot stop it or reverse its direction. You can use it as if it were a merry-go-round, jumping on and circling for days, as long as you keep your place in line. The tragic fate of anyone who gets out of step here is that you’ll get stampeded and you’ll never be noticed but for the fraction of a moment before you disappear. You’ve gotten out of sync. The Log Line Exercise
This exercise is designed to get you thinking outside of the box and become familiar with using a metaphor (like the one above) to describe the idea or concept behind the actual product, organization or service you provide.
1. Write a metaphor to describe the idea or concept behind a product or service your organization provides.
Alternatively, write a metaphor to describe your organization or department.
2. Based on the metaphor created, develop a Log Line for the product, service, organization or department you have selected.
Your assignment submission should be no longer than 2 type-written pages.
This exercise attempts to stretch your creativity. It may be difficult for some to determine the best approach to completing this assignment, the following steps and examples may provide the guidance needed.

In describing a 15 hz adapter, for instance, one might write a metaphor that illustrates how the adapter allows information to flow like a river running down a narrow gorge. The visual symbol could be a kayaker running a narrow gorge river. |
