Dear Sir,
I am writing in the hope that I may obtain an opportunity to further my study in financial statistics toward Master degree in your university.
My name is XX, an undergraduate student of the department of mathematics, university of Tennessee, Knoxville. Next year, I will graduate and I plan to continue my graduate study and research in the field of financial statistics at Columbia.
From 2004 to 2006, I studied in the first junior high school in Jingjiang City, Jiangsu Province, China. I ranked the 120th among 500 students. During 2006-2008, I finished my high study in the first high school in Jingjiang City. I studied harder during this period and I was the 100th among the 700 students of the same grade. In the year of 2008, I attended a preparatory class in Nanjing University, China for one year, I learned some basic knowledge of specialized courses and was familiar with certain undergraduate teaching methods to lay a foundation for my undergraduate study. I like math when I was young, I was more sensitive about digital and I was good at learning of science, including mathematics, physics, chemistry when I was in high school. I have a relatively strong logical thinking ability. My hobby is very extensive, I like reading, sports and participating in social practice. In terms of the content of reading, I’m interested in some extracurricular books relating to financial aspects. In addition, I also like sports, regular physical exercise allows me to have a healthy body and mind, which helps me to cope with the pressure brought by learning. Moreover, I also participated in a number of social practice such as becoming a community volunteer to care for children, taking part in propaganda on environmental protection, and so on. Through these activities, I learned how to love and tolerate, aid mutually.
I completed my undergraduate study at university of Tennessee, Knoxville during 2009-2013. My major was mathematics. I got 3.7 in GPA of my professional courses. As my professional curriculum included a postgraduate course, it badly affected my score of GPA to some extent. In addition to learning some basic undergraduate courses, I also participated in a series of research activities. From June 2012 to August 2012, I joined in the research experience for undergraduate (REU) in National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS). I participated in the project named modeling the evolution of sexual imprinting. I work 3-5 hours a day, my responsibility was to help building mathematical models and make use of statistical methods in research and testing. My tutors were R. Tucker Gilman, a professor of biological evolution from the University of Manchester and the professor of mathematics at the University of Tennessee who named Heather Finotti. In July 2012, I made a presentation of my research project in STEM REU Symposium at the university of Tennessee, I explained my research ideas, research programs and other contents, which acquired the unanimous endorsement of the audience. Through these research activities, I gained experience in scientific research and formed a more systematic scientific thinking, which enabled me to be able to skillfully use some statistical software such as MATLAB, SAS, SPSS, EVIEW, and so on. I mastered the commonly used statistical methods include co-integration analysis, structural equation model, factor analysis, and so forth.
From December 2012 to January 2013, I served as an intern in the Financial Research Department of People's Bank of China, Nanjing Branch. I was mainly engaged in translation work and did some research related to financial stability. During the internship, I also had the privilege to conduct a study together with Dr. Chen Yi to research the evolution and games of the credit market under the credit information sharing mechanism. I participated in the study of on the games and related articles will be published in the near future.
At the stage of undergraduate in America, I was familiar with the teaching of American universities, my English proficiency was also greatly improved, strengthening my confidence of continuing my study in the United States. After careful comparison and thinking, I would like to apply for statistics as the academic area of my graduate study at Colombia University. First of, students of Columbia University come from different countries in the world, they have diverse cultural backgrounds, which allow me to learn in a multi-cultural environment. Then, there is a professional teaching and research level in the area of statistics at Columbia University, I am full of longing and respect for this.
In the stage of my graduate study at Colombia University, I hope to be engaged in research related to financial statistics, especially the application of theories of statistic index in pricing, innovation and risk management of financial products. After I finish the study, I hope to return my home country to deal with work related to financial industry, I will take advantage of the advanced experience and knowledge that I learn at Columbia University to do my best for Chinese financial sector.
