● Reports are different than other papers.
● You are just reporting facts, you are not
proving a point or making an argument
● You should only use 3rd person (it, he, she)
● Passive sentences are very useful in reports.
If you find you want to use 'I' or 'you', try
making the sentence passive
● You will still have an introduction, a thesis, a
conclusion, body paragraphs, and topic
sentences.

Reporting on an Unfamiliar Topic
● Begin with a hook (anecdote, quote, etc.)
● Provide Background Information & Thesis
● Describe your topic and define any key terms
● Explain by:
– Comparing
– Classifying
– Analyzing Causes or effects
– Explaining Processes
● Conclude by restating thesis and referring to
