INTRODUCTION 简介

This paper will try to summarise my journey at Business School and how I as a person has gone through a personal development process in terms of the experiences and the learning gained in the past twelve months of the MBA course. To describe this wonderful and extra-ordinary journey in small number of words is a challenging task, but as I have learned throughout the MBA journey that no task is impossible if you believe in yourself and work whole heartedly towards achieving it.

This paper will try to focus on the key experiences which changed my perception about how I approach management and work assignments and deal with people (one of the key issues encountered during previous employment, and one of the motivations towards coming for an MBA was to understand and work with different set of people).

REFLECTIVE PRACTICE 反思性实践

Before I share my reflection on my experiences in these twelve months, I would first like to explain what reflection means to me.

Reflection is a process where individuals try to re-organise their knowledge and emotional orientations in order to achieve further insight about themselves (Moon, 2006). The practice of reflection is quite old and has been practiced in most spheres of life. In fact many skilled and introspective practitioners use their experience as a basis of measuring and revisiting the existing theories (Osterman, 1990). The existing literature identifies two types of reflective processes, which are based on the foundation of such an experience: direct learning from your own experience and indirect learning from the experience of others (Darr, Argote, and Epple, 1995; Chan, Li, and Pierce, 2014). And this is where the real learning from an MBA program lies, as it provides the platform, tools and opportunities to reflect upon.

Reflection involves in-depth analysis of your own-self and how do you learned throughout your experience. The MBA program was one of the few moments in my life which gave me the chance to sit back and look back at my life and introspect what I had learn all these years and where I am still lagging behind and need improvements. It involves the experiences of all the group tasks I participated in during MBA program where learning consists of working with different set of individuals and gaining more insight about me on how I performed as a team member and how we all improved through each other’s constructive feedback.

For me the good thing behind learning the art of practising reflection was that today when I look back and analyse how things had gone, I always comes up with new ideas and hindsight about how things could have been differently. The expected results coming out of a reflective practices involved change in my behaviour and change in how I perceive and verify learning’s. The results from this practice enabled me to think about why some of my endeavours were successful and some were unsuccessful, and how I both as an individual working alone or working together as a part of team can improve my skills and work practices and move forward towards achieving my goals. The learning from your direct experience is far more productive when it’s tied with reflection. This helps in strengthening the sense of competence and accomplishment but also help you in recognising the areas of concern and weakness.

To sum up reflection Stefano et al. (2014) stated that, there are three methods by means of which we can gain wisdom: Firstly, by internal reflection, which is the ethical and the honest way of reflection. Secondly, by imitation i.e. learning from someone else experience, which is the easiest way of things as for some individuals reflecting can be a daunting task. And thirdly, by experience which will be hardest as it can take a long time to gain an understanding of self efficacy.

MBA JOURNEY MBA的学习过程

Before coming to the MBA program, I was someone who was perceived as knowledgeable, logical and confident within their social circle and work environment. These were the personality traits which were known to me and others had also confirmed this through the Johari window exercise (Appendix). But now at the end of the course, I can feel a tremendous amount of change in myself. I know that there are still a lot of areas where I seriously need to work upon and have to show others that I can do it and putting my best efforts into it.

When I think about the initial induction week, I sometimes feel that I opened up too quickly in front of people without they even knowing them properly for a day and that’s what made the image of me in their minds and that image still stands, which is not a true reflection of what I am. I acknowledged the facts that initially I used to be very direct and sometimes made discomforting observations about other person, but I always believed in speaking what’s in my mind and never tried to influence my own thoughts just to please others. I was what I was and now when I look back I realised that approach was not good in a setting where you have students from different countries and cultures. My attitude at that moment was wrong and I should have been cautious of what I spoke and how I behaved. Those initial moments made me look like a person who is extrovert, self assertive, proud, a loud person who believe in shouting (in this case there no fault of mine as I have a high pitched voice and somehow I feel that it’s because of my background and environment where I was brought up and where such things seems to be normal). Some people still think like this till date but the feeling however underwent a lot of changes over time, as I started talking to people on a more personal level and started connecting with them, the wall of misconception that was erected in first few months started cracking. This encouraged me to incorporate change in my personality and try to be comforting and friendly to people. This approach worked wonders for me as I was able to deal with problems in a mature way which boosted my confidence levels and enabled me to perform well in exams and on the rest of the course.

The full time MBA program helped me in gaining a lot more confidence in public speaking and how to effectively lead, manage and build teams. One particular incident that proved I have the capabilities to be a leader and effective manager who is capable of handling of difficult situations was during my Board Room challenge. It was during our final presentation to the non-executive directors of the board that my team was unable to answer some of the tricky questions asked by the directors about the viability of our business. On seeing that no one was willing to come forward and give at least a satisfactory response to it, I took the charge and defended what we as a team agreed about the benefits of adopting the strategy and even though it’s was a risky one we held to it because of the future synergy benefits associated with it. Even though it was expected that CEO of the group should have handle such questions from board, I took the initiative in answering the questions, even sometimes getting into a disagreement with one of the non-executive directors but still held to what I believed was right and what we as team thought of doing so. That’s was a pretty bold move on my part and frankly I was a little nervous in taking on the initiative and responding to the board, but that one moment of courage changed me. Also when my course director gave the feedback about our performance the special mention of this incident made me much more confident in taking on challenges. I have never handled such situations in work place and that particular incident had a lasting impact on me and changed my perception about how I look at people and how I look at myself. This helped me to mature over the course of time and be more independent and confident in taking decisions.

The experience of handling a diverse group of people from different culture with different attitudes towards work and team work helped me a lot in my journey during BRC challenge and after that also in the consulting challenge. It made me a lot calmer in my approach towards team working situations and improved my team management skills, which was one of my primary aims before coming to MBA program i.e. to explore the hidden potential and improve upon existing personality traits.

The only anxiety that came along with start of MBA was that of studying after such a long academic break and writing exams in a foreign country that have an educational system completely alien to what present back home. These anxieties have remained with me throughout the journey and are still present right at the end also. This is one of the things I can confirm would be present in future also and I seriously hope that I don’t consider studying further.

Upon analysing the Johari window and the feedback which I received during the duration of the course from my colleagues and teachers gave a lot of insight about the positive and negative traits about my personality. The results were a learning curve for me, as I was aware of my dominant qualities but what surprised me the qualities which I didn’t know I had in myself but other people saw in me. Some of the dominant traits that came out of this exercise were: extroverted, friendly, happy, nervous, sentimental and self-assertive. I knew that happy and friendly was obvious qualities but the surprise was the extroverted, sentimental and self-assertive qualities which I felt I never possessed. I think being friendly and telling your friends what you think is considered to be extroverted person but what most people don’t know is that I always self-conscious of my surroundings i.e. what I talk, how I talk and behave etc, but I think this where people don’t understand me. Also I used to be self-assertive when I started the course, as my course director commented that I have to soft sell sometimes, so after the initial feedback I tried to incorporate the changes into my actions and behaviour and I feel that I have come across a long way but for people it’s a reminiscent of past me.
